Goalie School

The BYHA goalie school is aimed at the goaltender between the ages of 6-14 years old. Our program works on development of the goaltending basic skills. The first step is where our instructors review the goaltender's equipment to ensure that it fits properly for comfort and safety.

The program consists of 24 (one hour) sessions. The path of the program allows the goaltender to develop the basic skills and apply them in their games. Some of the topics covered in this program are:

  • Skating
  • Puck Handling
  • Poke check
  • Skate Save
  • Proper Stance
  • Covering the Posts
  • Two-Pad Slide
  • Arc Faces
  • Covering Angle
  • Butterfly
  • Behind the Net

Each session has its specific topic in which our instructors in a group setting demonstrate the topic for the class, and then allow one of the goaltender repeats the demonstration.

The class then breaks into individual goaltending practice in which the goalie repeats the topic of the session while pucks are shoot to simulate a game setting. At the end of our program each goaltender receives a written evaluation.

Our Director of the program is Rob Beatty. Rob is a graduate of Sir Wilfred Laurier with a major in Ph. Ed. Sociology. As part of his hockey development, Rob played AAA hockey in Brampton. He then progress to Tier 2 hockey with the Brampton Warriors. While attending university Rob played for Sir Wilfred Laurier team that won the Queens Cup in 1989 and 1990.
