Refereeing in Brampton
There are three teams on the ice when we play hockey, the two opposing teams and the refereeing team. Just as with the players on the ice the two person or three person referee crew is a team, individuals just as intent on doing their best on the ice to be successful at what they do.
All BYHA Referees must obtain certification through the Canadian Hockey Officiating Program (CHOP). The Canadian Hockey Officiating Program CHOP is structured into six program levels that cater to the needs of all officials, from the novice Level I through to a national and/or international Level VI referee. To see how Referees are certified click on the CHOP page.
In Brampton the BYHA has its own Referee In Chief who is responsible for the supervision of all BYHA referees. The Referee in Chief is an appointed position by the Board of Directors.
The scheduling of referees in Brampton is done by a Senior Referee Scheduler, a Junior Referee Scheduler and a Scheduler at large. All of these schedulers report to the Referee in Chief. Referees are scheduled taking into account factors such as level of play (i.e.) Atom or Midget) and the experience and CHOP level each Referee has obtained. To see what's involved in scheduling Referees click on the Administration Group page.
