About the Program
- Our hockey school program runs for approximately 24 weeks, generally from early October - March.
- The program is geared to 5 through 7year-old skaters and some older children (up to 8 and 9) who have no hockey skills and limited skating ability. This is not a learn to skate program, for learn to skate programs please consult the City of Brampton Parks and Recreation department.
- All skaters must wear a full set of equipment including mouthguard to participate.
- Each session is 50 minutes in length, and is at the same rink and the same time each week.
- Generally there are between 45 - 50 skaters on the ice with 8 - 10 instructors at all sessions.
- 75% of the children are first year skaters' and the remaining 25% are returning players.
- Our main purpose is to further develop basic balance and skating ability. Initially our emphasis is on those skating skills that relate to hockey and then we introduce the puck. It is with proper instruction that these skaters will move up to the next level of hockey.
- Development means progress, so each week the drills will vary little, for repetition and development of skating skills. If you think about it, skating has many different aspects to it. We try to teach all the aspects, but only as the skaters are ready.
- Remember, you have to know how to walk, before you can run.
Hockey School Objectives
- To introduce children to a fun physical activity.
- To teach the FUNdamentals of hockey.
- To help children refine their motor skills.
